A Holy Lenten Season

The season of Lent has begun and our church is in full swing.  The Lenten season consists of the forty days leading up to Easter not including Sundays.  This has historically been a time of spiritual preparation for a congregation to take stock of their relationship with God.  Our church definitely takes lent seriously and we have a wide variety of ways for you to engage.

Skyline Urban Ministry is our United Methodist ministry with the poor in the Oklahoma City metro area.  We are in a challenge to raise more money and collect more canned goods during Lent than New Covenant United Methodist Church in Edmond.  We are off to a great start and this is a more externally focused discipline for Lent.

Daily devotion with the Gospel of John.  I would encourage you to join me in reading through the Gospel of John each day.  You can access the daily readings on my blog here: http://precedinggrace.blogspot.com/.  If you are getting a late start, don’t worry, you can always start at the beginning and catch up!  This is a wonderful way to think about how the story of Jesus applies to our lives today.

Bible study with the Gospel of Mark.  I will be teaching over the final 5 chapters of Mark on Wednesday nights from 6 to 7 pm.  For this particular Bible study, we will begin with chapter twelve and take a chapter each week until we finish.  You may read ahead if you wish but there is no advanced preparation necessary.

Journey with Jesus to the Cross.  For worship each week, we will be following the lectionary readings as we encounter the people who encounter Jesus as he makes his way to Jerusalem.  This particular Sunday will be Nicodemus from John 3:1-17.

Holy Week devotions.  Our church has a strong tradition of offering a daily breakfast and devotional time on the mornings of Holy Week.  This year they will be April 10-14 and will feature young people connected with our congregation who are interested in ministry.  I would encourage you to mark your calendars!

We will also have Holy Thursday (April 13) and Good Friday (April 14) services at 7 pm this year.  This preparation will culminate in a wonderful Easter celebration on April 16.  We will feature five times to worship that morning: 7 am (Wesley Hall), 8:00 am, 9:30 am, 10:50 am (Wesley Hall) and 11:00 am.

This congregation is a wonderful place to grow spiritually.  We hope that some of these events will speak to you as we journey with Jesus together!
