      Over the years questions have been raised about the scrolls' authenticity, about the people who hid them away during the period in which they lived, about the secrets the scrolls might reveal, and about the intentions of the scrolls' custodians in restricting access. The Library's exhibition describes the historical context of the scrolls and the Qumran community from whence they may have originated; it also relates the story of their discovery 2,000 years later. In addition, the exhibition encourages a better understanding of the challenges and complexities connected with scroll research.

      The traveling exhibit from The Project Judaica Foundation.  Since their discovery nearly half a century ago, the scrolls and the identity of the nearby settlement have been the object of great scholarly and public interest, as well as heated debate and controversy. Why were the scrolls hidden in the caves? Who placed them there? Who lived in Qumran? Were its inhabitants responsible for the scrolls and their presence in the caves? Of what significance are the scrolls to Judaism and Christianity? This exhibition presents twelve Dead Sea Scroll fragments and archaeological artifacts courtesy of the Israel Antiquities Authority as well as supplementary materials from the Library of Congress. It is designed to retell the story of the scrolls' discovery; explore their archaeological and historical context; introduce the scrolls themselves; explore the various theories concerning the nature of the Qumran community; and examine some of the challenges facing modern researchers as they struggle to reconstruct the scrolls from the tens of thousands of fragments that remain.

      The AMERICAN-ISRAELI COOPERATIVE ENTERPRISE (AICE) was established in 1993 to strengthen the U.S.-Israel relationship by emphasizing the fundamentals of the alliance — the values our nations share. Tangibly, this means developing social and educational programs in the U.S. based on innovative, successful Israeli models that address similar domestic problems, and bringing novel U.S. programs to Israel. These cooperative activities, which stem from our common values, are called Shared Value Initiatives.  Jewish Virtual Library is the most comprehensive online Jewish encyclopedia in the world, covering everything from anti-Semitism to Zionism. So far, more than 8,000 articles and 4,000 photographs and maps have been integrated into the site.     Who are Grace & Truth Books? We are the family business of Dennis & Naomi Gundersen, and our four boys, all of whom have made significant contributions to the business.   Purchase these products and more through this Interfaith organization.  Internationally-recognized fair trade standards require paying a fair price to farmers, including a guaranteed minimum when market prices are low; working directly with certified, democratically-run farming cooperatives; and encouraging ecologically sustainable farming practices. Equal Exchange, founded in 1986, uses those practices to offer consumers coffee, tea and cocoa direct from small-scale farmer cooperatives in Latin America, Africa and Asia.

DEATH AND DYING

  PBS:  What challenges emerge from balancing medical intervention with care and comfort at the end of life?  How can you maintain meaning throughout your life?  Learn about solutions for finding a better death and explore the options for humane care for the dying.

• With Eyes Open
  For many viewers, watching the landmark series "On Our Own Terms: Moyers on Dying" (link above) will provoke a wide variety of emotions. The series asks us to begin the difficult task of contemplating our own mortality.  In response, KQED presented these four half-hour companion shows: honest discussions about caregiving, grief, difficult decisions and what may lie beyond death. Hosted by veteran journalist, Ray Suarez, these programs invite viewers to look at the end of life With Eyes Open, and by doing so make their lives more meaningful.
