CURRENT RELIGIOUS NEWS AND ISSUES

  • Religion & Ethics Newsweekly from PBS
In the aftermath of September 11, and with the ongoing conflict in the Holy Land and the scandal over priestly sexual misconduct within America's Catholic Church, coverage of religion news has never been more important. RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY, hosted by veteran journalist Bob Abernethy, is the only national TV newsmagazine program devoted entirely to the news of religion and spirituality, and major ethical issues. Produced by Thirteen/WNET New York, the program explores the top moral questions facing the country and profiles the most interesting people and groups in the world of religion and ethics. It is distributed to PBS stations nationwide.

WORLD RELIGIONS

  • Dreams of Tibet: Understanding Tibetan Buddhism
PBS Series:  This is Tricycle magazine's interview with actor and free-Tibet activist Richard Gere in which Gere discusses how he came to practice Buddhism, how it has affected his life, and his relationship with his teacher, the Dalai Lama.

  • Islam:  Empire of Faith
PBS Series:  An Introduction to the world of Islam and Muhammed; The Fascinating World of Islam; Creating a Textile Museum Piece from the Islamic Empire; Great Thinkers and Accomplishments of Islam Fact Cubes; and Renaissance Man Comparison Poster.

  • Muslims

    • Early Church Documents:  Church Councils
    • Early Church Documents:  Histories
This section contains two categories of documents: general histories by ancient writers covering whole eras, and primary source biographies of historical figures who are not generally considered to be saints by any major religion but who have significance for religious history.
    • Early Church Documents:  Lives of the Saints
The First Ten Centuries; Lives of Western Saints (XI/XV Centuries)
    • Early Church History Glossary
The Ecole Glossary contains short, 100-200 word glosses on topics relating to early Church history. These glosses are intimately linked to the Ecole Chronology and to each other. Because we plan to include several links in the glossary, links will refer to sites within the glossary or the chronology, unless specified otherwise, the one exception being the [DOC] symbol which points to a version of the document previously named somewhere on the internet beyond the Ecole Initiative.
    • Early Church History Major Articles
    • Ecole Chronology Project
The Ecole Chronology Project supplements the Ecole Initiative by providing a two-dimensional (temporal and geographical) model of events, persons, places, etc. that are pertinent in some way to early Church history.

    • Writings of Early Church Fathers
Ante-Nicene Fathers (The Writings of the Fathers down to A.D. 325); Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers - St. Augustine Volumes and St. Chrysostum Writings; Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers - Series II.

DEATH AND DYING

  • On Our Own Terms:  Moyers on Dying
PBS:  What challenges emerge from balancing medical intervention with care and comfort at the end of life?  How can you maintain meaning throughout your life?  Learn about solutions for finding a better death and explore the options for humane care for the dying.

  • With Eyes Open
For many viewers, watching the landmark series "On Our Own Terms: Moyers on Dying" (link above) will provoke a wide variety of emotions. The series asks us to begin the difficult task of contemplating our own mortality.  In response, KQED presented these four half-hour companion shows: honest discussions about caregiving, grief, difficult decisions and what may lie beyond death. Hosted by veteran journalist, Ray Suarez, these programs invite viewers to look at the end of life With Eyes Open, and by doing so make their lives more meaningful.
