Church and Society Ministry

The Social Principles of the United Methodist Church are a prayerful and thoughtful effort to speak to human issues in a contemporary world from a sound biblical and theological foundation in accordance with our church traditions.

The Church and Society Ministry is that group of church members committed to encourage Christian lines of action that assist humankind to move toward a world where peace and justice are achieved.

It is our responsibility to organize initiatives within our church which will inform, motivate, and encourage other church members to promote social justice throughout our society and which will assist them in identifying and responding to critical social issues at all levels.

WHIZ KIDS!

Whiz Kids is a faith based, non-profit tutoring program is partnering with our congregation and a church in northeast OKC to provide tutors for students from Dunbar Elementary School.

There is a significant amount of data to indicate that students who receive tutoring at this point in their lives are less likely to end up in prison, for instance.  That's a pretty significant return for a small investment of time.  Volunteers are asked to commit to one afternoon a week on a schedule that roughly follows the school year.  Training will be provided.  Sponsored by our Church and Society ministry, this is a chance to literally change someone's life.  If you are interested, please call the church office at 341-0107.

Here is an article about the partnership.

An Ongoing Project...

Recycle Paper!

Join us in helping save trees as well as helping keep as many things out of landfills as possible.

Thank You!!! Our paper recycling program here at First Church continues to grow.

An update on your paper recycling from October, 2006 through March, 2007. This Church has received a total of $388.10 with an average of $64 per month. Keep bringing those papers to recycle, every bit adds up to money for the church and saves landfill space. Great job you are doing!

We ask that you bring newspapers, old catalogs,  sale circulars, magazines, junk mail, old homework papers, old coloring books etc. - in short any kind of paper (even "slick" paper adds, catalogues, magazines, etc.) and place them in the yellow and green bin in the west parking lot. It is such a small way to help, but reaps long-term benefits.

Thank You Notes...
