EDMOND FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL MEETING 

March 30, 2008 1:30 PM

 

 

Attendance:

Devotional: Jerry Cotton opened the meeting with, “Why did Jesus fold the linen cloth after the Resurrection?” and a prayer.   

 

Minutes:  Minutes from the January meeting were approved as corrected.

 

New Business:

Jerry Cotton asked that we elect a Vice Chairman of Administrative Council. Bill Turner volunteered to act as Vice Chairman, and the Council approved.

 

Committee Reports

 

Trustees Update: report by Danny Moss

§  Bob Hernandez has been hired on an hourly basis for church projects.

§  Three Koala changing tables have been installed in bathrooms.

§  In technology, the routers have recently been changed. As a result, church computers are not “kicked” off-line inadvertently.  At this point, the telephone system and computers are working well.

 

Program Ministries: Connie Alexander

§  Program Ministries are functioning well.

 

Trustees: Don Baker for Rodney Indermill

§  Repairs to the smoking furnace have been made.  Trustees are seeking bids to replace furnace and have 4 bids so far.  More clarification on the bids is needed.

§  Sanctuary Lighting Project has been completed at a total cost of $1,672.81.  King Electric’s bill was $1,420.00 and the bulbs were purchased from 1000 Bulbs via the internet at a cost of $252.81.  The bulbs are guaranteed for approximately 5 years. King Electric checked the wiring from the junction box to the breaker box and it was found to be in excellent condition. They also rewired the circuit for the pop machine, refrigerator and microwave in Room 102.  These units were overloading a circuit to the church office.  That cost was $505.75.

 

 SPRC: Claudia Straw

§  SPRC will meet to consider pastoral salaries.  They have been doing research on comparable salaries.

§  New personnel policies are complete.

 

Finance: Bill Turner

§  FUMC had a successful Stewardship Campaign.

§  Thanks to Barb Denny for great posters.

§  Thanks to Phyllis Gorman for meals.

§  Increased estimates of giving from last year.

§Approximately $862,000 total revenue projected for 2008

§$811,000 total revenue in 2007

§  Most committees have submitted budgets.

§  We are in good financial shape!

§  The Council also thanked Bill Turner for his hard work on the campaign.

 

Preschool – Angela Duncan

  • Preschool is in the middle of enrollment for the Fall 2008 term. Enrollments are near capacity.
  • At this time they are working on:
    • Swing set for elementary kids only.
    • Cleanliness of the bathrooms.

 

Historian – Jerry Brown - absent

  • No report

 

Scouts: Jim Hagar

§  6 new scouts

§  4 new adults

§  25-30 youth at meetings

§  30 adults on the Charter

§  In January, Scouts went to Camp Simpson.

§  In January and February, they learned Wilderness Skills.

§  In March they went climbing at Lawton.

§  Background checks on all adults working with scouts.

§  Thanks to the church for supporting Scouts.

 

UMW: Written report by Burchie Smith

§  UMW and Lenten Bible Program presented on March 1, 2008.

§  Wesley Foundation received $320 for their Spring Mission Trip.

§  Next endeavor will be UMW Sunday on April 13 – ladies will lead worship for 8:30 and 11:00 services.

 

UMM: Frank Trenary

§  April 24 will be the next meeting – biscuits and gravy will be served.

§  Future plans will be discussed at UMM annual meeting

 

Lay Leader: Derek Smithee - absent

§  No report

 

Staff Reports

 

Youth: Thomas Riffey

§  Gearing up for summer.

§  Spring Training went well – although several kids were ill during the trip.

§  Working with Edmond Youth on Baccalaureate.

§  Recruiting more leaders – Thomas’s baby is due during one of the summer camps.

§  Active youth – about 25-30 grades 6-12.

§  Easter video was good.

§  Painting project will be completed by contract.

 

Children’s Ministry: Jeni Markham Clewell –absent- written report by Jo Logan 

  • WOW on Wednesdays – younger elementary children are having game, craft and story fun with help of Tammy Padgett and Tanya Logan.  Older elementary children are learning to play hand chimes.
  • Nursery Coordinator Jeanine Randall has started using security ID sign-in stickers.  New Carpet in the downstairs east wing of the CAC.
  • New rockers and changing tables in both nurseries and a new evacuation crib.
  • Children’s Worship Bulletins for ages 3-6 and 7-12 in both worship spaces.
  • Leaders/teachers are needed for Children’s Sunday school.  We are hoping volunteers will serve for more than 1 month to offer continuity and relationship-building with our children.  Shepherds are being asked to serve for 9 months with summer time having different shepherds.
  • Welcome desk – working to staff desk at the children’s nursery entrance from 9:30-11 on Sunday mornings.
  • Angela Duncan has been leading the children in singing every Sunday morning.
  • Jill Hurt has volunteered to chair evening VBS July 21-25.  Theme is Rainforest Adventure.
  • Many Children’s Camp in the summer at Canyon Camp.  Our Church scholarships half the fee for every child whose parents are members.
  • Prayer bears were huge success.  One hundred and fifteen bears were distributed to agencies that help children in traumatic situations.

 

Reverend Danny Moss

  • Church is doing background checks for volunteers and staff in the children’s ministries.
  • The Civil Suit filed against the church, Wesley Foundation and Conference is finally over.

Judgment has gone in our favor.

  • Master plan – A building committee will be formed to lead the CAC portion of the Master Plan.
  • Natural Church Development – An evangelism program is being considered

 

Other Business:

 

  • Chairman Cotton set the following tentative dates for 2008 Council meetings:

§  May 18

§  July 20

§  September 21

§  November 16

 

§  At the suggestion of one of the members, the Council decided to put Council minutes on the church website.

 

 

Revisit Visioning Discussion – Jerry Cotton
  • Building maintenance is improving.
  • Shepherd new church:
    • The Conference has changed their concept for shepherding a new church. In this light, we are currently waiting to hear from the Conference regarding what role our church might play in forming a new church.
  • Natural Church Development:  A committee will report back to the Council regarding the development of this program.
